The Global Warming Potential (GWP) of CO₂ is indeed very low compared to HFCs (1 against several thousand); moreover, CO₂ does not present any problems of toxicity, flammability, or impact on the ozone layer.

CO₂ presents unique challenges compared to traditional HFCs, requiring the right technology to match or exceed HFC efficiency.
LUVE has addressed this by investing in CO₂ research and developing a specialized test plant with a unique climatic chamber in Europe to advance heat exchanger efficiency.

If CO₂ refrigeration cycles are less efficient, they could increase emissions due to higher energy use. Thus, achieving high thermodynamic efficiency is crucial.
LUVE addresses this by developing highly efficient CO₂ heat exchangers, supported by advanced testing facilities.

The plant tests finned CO₂ heat exchangers, including air-cooled unit coolers and gas coolers.
It also facilitated the development of a CO₂ fin-and-tube heat exchanger project, aimed at enhancing understanding of heat exchange processes in evaporation, condensation, and trans-critical gas cooling.

The importance of calibration
The influence of oil on the internal heat exchange coefficient also falls within the scope of the research. Important was the calibration made on software that calculates product performance very precisely, with potential improvements to products.
In particular, it was possible to calibrate a specific method able to take into account the behavior of the fluid during trans-critical cooling, properly considering all the parameters affecting real performance.
